Karma

"Do you believe in Karma", she asked.
"I am not sure", he replied. "I am not sure what exactly Karma is."
Helpful as ever, I almost opened my mouth to explain to him all about Karma, when I realized that it would be wiser to check the textbook definition first. He is not easily sastisfied and enjoys being demanding in regards to words sometimes, for argument's sake.

First a few synonyms for Karma:
Main Entry: karma
Part of Speech: noun
Synonyms: atmosphere, aura, destiny, fate, feeling, kismet, power, vibrations

.. and the dictionary definitions for karma are:
1. Hinduism, Buddhism. action, seen as bringing upon oneself inevitable results, good or bad, either in this life or in a reincarnation: in Hinduism one of the means of reaching Brahman.
2. Theosophy. the cosmic principle according to which each person is rewarded or punished in one incarnation according to that person's deeds in the previous incarnation.
3. fate; destiny.
4. the good or bad emanations felt to be generated by someone or something.

Better yet:
karma [Sanskrit] in Indian philosophy, the total effect of a person's actions, both mental and physical, on his or her existence; a person's present state, including health, is determined by actions from previous existence, and present actions determine their destiny for future existence.

According to Buddhism, this inequality is due not only to heredity, environment, "nature and nurture", but also to Karma. In other words, it is the result of our own past actions and our own present doings. We ourselves are responsible for our own happiness and misery. We create our own Heaven. We create our own Hell. We are the architects of our own fate.
