A short story by Sabina Nore

He didn’t know if there was still time.
He ran up, as fast as he could, to climb on top of the book case and see if the key was still safe behind the least favorite of all his books. But alas, the key was gone.

Who took it?
When?
How did they know of his secret place?
The box could now be unlocked by someone else.
Someone else?!

A cold shiver ran down and up his spine and a million things he hadn’t thought of before suddenly clouded his mind. A chaos of incomprehensible noise and numbing silence blasted like a hurricane through his brain.

How could he allow something so precious to slip through his fingers?
He had it. No.
More than that!
Not only was it his but he was the only one who knew of its existence.
Now everything was in question. Suddenly everything was possible.
The box could now be opened by anyone in the whole wide world.

If only he would have kept it close by, close to his heart. No. Closer! Under his skin, as part of him.
There it would have been safe. There no one would have ever thought to look for it. Nobody.

They are more likely to ask interesting questions, and there is something like a camaraderie in it as well. Even if the two artists don’t know each other personally, I believe there is a kind of respect among artists. You know what it means to be one, so you have to respect anyone making a similar life choice. There is a certain beauty to it, and since I like to surround myself with beauty of all sorts, I have decided to interview artists I consider exceptional and worth talking to. I hope you enjoy my choices!”

When I first saw his paintings the style looked familiar and his artworks made sense to me. Playful, surrealistic and with a touch of lowbrow – what’s not to like?

I hope you enjoy the following interview and the art of El Gato Chimney!

Sabina: What makes you angry?

El Gato Chimney:

Arrogance and rudeness.

Sabina: What inspires you?

El Gato Chimney:

An infinity of things, and I always find something new that catches my interest.
Nature definitely gives me a lot of inspiration.

Sabina: What’s your favorite childhood memory?

El Gato Chimney:

I have many, all related to moments of discovery and play.
They all are equally important to me, but probably of no interest to a stranger.

Sabina: What’s your favorite tradition?

El Gato Chimney:

I do not have any.

Sabina: What’s your least favorite thing to do?

El Gato Chimney:

I dislike going out to dance.

Sabina: What’s your favorite color? Why?

El Gato Chimney:

All the hues of purple fascinate me, they create very special effects.

Sabina: If you could be, or transform into anyone for one day, to then be yourself again at the end of day, who would you be and why?

El Gato Chimney:

A common person from various eras of the past, so I could experience certain events of human history.

The First Steps

Sabina: When did you first know you are an artist?

El Gato Chimney:

Suddenly I got caught by a creative fever that I had to second.
I have this need to create, without having to ask myself if I am making art or not.

Sabina: Were your artistic inclinations supported by your family?

El Gato Chimney:

Not really, I belong to a modest family and they thought that having a “normal” job with a monthly salary was the best way to ensure a future for myself.
I cannot really say that they discouraged me, but my choice of career was never greeted with enthusiasm.

Sabina: Did you have a favorite painter growing up? Who, would you say, has influenced you the most?

El Gato Chimney:

I have never attended art school, I am a self-taught artist, so my artistic knowledge has always been dictated by my own tastes from the beginning.
That said, the artist who influenced me the most is Doze Green, as he helped me realize that I want to depict the invisible.
I gather my inspirations not only artists, but also from anthropologists, historians, poets and scientists.
My researches range over a wide variety of subjects, such as alchemy, ancient and modern art, magic, mirabilia, occultism, popular folklore, spiritualism and tribal art.
These studies make me feel particularly fond of the artistic movements of the 800s/900s, but my poetics and my vision belong to the 21st century.

Sabina: How about a favorite painting?

El Gato Chimney:

Arnold Böcklin’s Island Of The Dead, the third version located in Berlin, is the very essence of my research.
I spent a lot of time in front of this masterpiece.

Sabina: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received regarding art?

El Gato Chimney:

To be myself and to do what I find right, ignoring “advices” from people that cannot even hold a pencil.

The Art

Sabina: The first impression your paintings make is colorful and playful. If you had to invent a new name for the art you create, what would it be?

El Gato Chimney:

Many think that, but for many others they are ambiguous and creepy.
I love the ambivalence of my art, it means that it acts differently on the subconscious of the beholders.
I would not know about the name, sometimes I think about it because I feel that my work is different from what I see around and I wonder where it belongs, but in the end labels are meaningless.

Sabina: Do you rather paint with your head or your heart? It’s probably a combination of the two, but if you had to choose one, which would it be?

El Gato Chimney:

Definitely the heart, it is the heart that guides the hand and takes the right choices, even the ones that could seem very risky but that, in the end, prove to be good.

Sabina: Which mediums do you use?

El Gato Chimney:

Mostly acrylic paints, but I love printmaking and sculpture too.
And I have wanted to work with wood for the longest time…

Sabina: Which medium do you enjoy the most?

El Gato Chimney:

The medium is just a means to realize a concept, so I choose from time to time the right one for my current needs.

Sabina: Has your approach to painting and art changed over time, in any way?

El Gato Chimney:

Of course, due to the experience acquired.
The more I learn, the more I feel the need to revise my beliefs and my inspirations.
Change and evolution are fundamental for an artist.

Sabina: Did you ever create a painting you couldn’t part from?

El Gato Chimney:

I have to admit that I am always sad to part from my paintings.
There is one piece in particular that I sold because I needed money at the time, but everytime I think about it I regret selling it.
This experience helped me to learn how to part from my works more easily.
I will never part from my sketchbooks, though.

Sabina: What’s next in store for you? What may we look forward to?

El Gato Chimney:

I am curating an international group show at Avantgarden Gallery in Milan about mirabilia and I am almost done with a small resin sculpture, that I hope to show soon.
I have nothing else in my schedule at the moment, but it is for the better, as I want to work on new projects.

You and Others

Sabina: If you could erect a monument to any person, alive or dead, to be placed in front of your house, who would it be?

El Gato Chimney:

No one.

Sabina: Why?

El Gato Chimney:

Because there a lot of people that would deserve to be remembered forever for their work.

Sabina: How do you feel about teaching art? Have you done it? Could you imagine doing it?

El Gato Chimney:

No, I have never done it, but I would not mind trying it, although I have no idea if I would be able to do it, having so much more to learn myself.

Sabina: If you could have a group exhibit with any three artists that are currently alive, whom would you choose?

El Gato Chimney:

I would rather not answer for now… I am going to realize my dream group exhibit!

Sabina: Lastly, a classic interview question, but an important one none the less. What would be your message to aspiring artists?

El Gato Chimney:

Be yourself and be open-minded, do not follow trends, respect everyone and, above all, always try to be humble and self-critical.

Practically Speaking…

Sabina: If someone would like to buy one of your paintings, what would be the best way to do that?

El Gato Chimney:

They should contact the galleries I collaborate with, and if they do not find there what they are looking for, then they should talk to me, because I strongly believe that everyone has to find the right painting for them.

The Furies were goddesses of justice and order. In art they are traditionally depicted as three ugly women, however considering the old ways of looking at spirited women, at women who won’t conform, it is highly questionable whether the Furies actually deserved such a depiction. Their “job” was to restore harmony and punish only those who commit crimes against the natural order of things. The Furies in Roman mythology correspond to the Erinyes in Greek mythology, who were daughters of the primordial goddess Nyx (‘the night’).

Loosely inspired by mythology, the Sabinian Furies are an archetypical symbol of power and justice, representing the Fury that either lays dormant, or roams, inside of every woman. The Furies are a trilogy of paintings by Sabina Nore.

Cool! I really like how the mirror looks, as well as the “abyss” in front of it.

As for me, I got into my painting – big time, but I accept the suggested format, so I’m not going to reveal the whole picture yet either. Instead, here are two details, each containing numerous details….

As you can see I am painting in black and white at the moment. Color and additional details come at a later point.

For instance, the main character in front of the mirror will probably be much more “fleshy” and muscular.

In the second picture is one of the scenes that shows something that is happening in the ring, a boy infatuated with it all, and right at the entrance of the circus tent, a rabbit that’s coming out of a top hat. The magic is spilled right at the entrance, so to speak, but that doesn’t make a bit of difference.

The child is outside the ring, but it can’t wait to join the circus. What it doesn’t know is that it is already chained to it, and doesn’t have a choice but to eventually become part of the spectacle. The nail is stuck into the ground inside the ring (not visible in the above picture, obviously) and would pull the child in to face the same direction as everyone else who is “playing along”. Direction, and who is facing which, is important in my painting, but that will be more clear when a bigger part of the picture is visible.

This is where I’m at so far…Just some simple sketches to build around. I wanted to make the mirror a character in the painting so it has become anthropomorphised into a face with cloven hooves for feet. The masked figure is ambiguous as to its logical position relative to the mirror and as to its identity (is it the viewer?). The circus tent will be dark and foreboding and the ringmaster will have a sort of perplexed look of not quite understanding his role in these bizarre events. Just like the expression I wear every day….
