Dickens’ Dream

Charles Dickens would be 200 years old today. As a small memorial I thought I’d share a painting by a Victorian artist called Robert William Buss: Dickens’ Dream.

Dickens' Dream by Robert William Buss

Buss was an avid admirer of Dickens’s work which is what moved him to paint the large watercolor painting called “Dicken’s Dream” in which Charles Dickens is surrounded by various characters from his books. How the characters looked wasn’t a figment of Buss’ imagination but an attempt to reproduce the works of artists who illustrated Dickens’ work. Buss died approximately 5 years later, before he could complete the painting. Ironically, it is this unfinished piece for which he is best known today.
